Los Reyes: The Magi, Bullfighting & Quechua Dances

We had the pleasure of experiencing a festival in town this past weekend in celebration of Epiphany and the coming of the Magi. There was bullfighting, horse roping, dancing, music and many other things, but the Awamaki staff were most excited by the presence of churros (fried donuts shaped like hot dogs, which by the way you can get fresh in Logan Square).

Honestly, the bullfighting was pretty exciting and a little scary! Several times bullfighters were thrown into the air by horns that looked pretty sharp to me. This elicited laughter from the Peruvians and gasps from Emily and myself. We decided to wander over to the dancing after a while and watched as the different communities danced their way through stories from Peru's past and mythos.

Although, I don't really know what this dance was, but it reminded me of a short maypole. You can't really appreciate it from the picture, but the masks are absolutely frightening...
